Lot of Radio Equipment believed to be from a WLR-6(V) ESM Suite originally designed for Sturgeon Class Fast Attack Nuclear Submarines in the mid to late 1960’s.
The prime contractor was Sylvania Electric Products, Inc. of Mountain View, California for the Navy Department – Bureau of Ships.
The first item is a VHF / UHF Manual Receiver – Linear I.F. It takes plug-in tuners. It features FM, CW, AM/MAN, and AM/AFC demodulation modes.
It is supposed to feature I.F. bandwidths of 20 KHz/ 75KHz / and 500 KHz but ONLY the 20 KHz I.F. Board is installed, the 75 KHz and 500 KHz I.F. boards are MISSING (We Do NOT have). This unit is Serial number# F0179 (ACL S/N# 293).
I do NOT know its CORRECT model number, the case says TS-2332 but that is NOT correct. The radio was produced by ACL (Astro Communications Lab).
The Second item is a dual RF Tuner plug-in storage rack.
It is a 2U high (3.5”) X 19” wide storage rack for storing 2 R.F. plug-ins for the above receiver when they are not in use.
    The Third thru Sixth items included are 4 each R.F. plug-ins that appear to fit the VHF / UHF receiver; they cover 30 – 100MHz, 90 – 300MHz, 250 – 500MHz, and 490 – 1000MHz. The frequency range is printed on a back-lite Film tape viewed through a plastic window in a bezel. These 4 Plug-in R.F. tuners are identified as follows: TN-488/WRR Tuning Unit RF 30 – 100MHz, Serial Number# A132, Mfgr 19905, Contract N00024-67-C-1263. TN-489 / WRR Tuning Unit RF 90 – 300MHz, Serial Number A107, Mfgr 19905, Contract N00024-67-C-1263.
    Type TH-203P 250 – 500 MHz (tuning unit), Serial Number# 103, Mfgr 19905. And lastly, SH-214P Serial Number 0150, Assy. 02-680553-1, Tuning Unit RF, VHF-UHF Manual, 490 – 1000MHz, Mfgr 07397, used on units 02-680543-4, 02-680547-2.
This last tuning unit has a broken main tuning knob and one of its 3 securing latches is missing.
The seventh and last item includes is an Audio Amplifier Unit. It is marked as follows: AM-6131/WLR-6A(V) Amplifier, Audio Frequency S/N# 0006, DWG# 02-680653-1, manufactured for Navy Department – Bureau of Ships by contractor Sylvania Electric Products, Inc. Contract# N00024-(information is missing). Also on this unit is the following nomenclature: NSN 5895-00-499-0229; N00104-90-6-A033 / 0013 Repair Date 04/12/93.
These Items are untested and are sold for use as a Mock-Up Display of part of an ESM Suite for an obsolete Navy Submarine or other Navy ship. I am attaching info from “Terry O’ watkins-johnson *at* terryo.org” that I found on the internet that describes what we believe this equipment was used for:
The WLR-6 was originally designed for the Los Angeles class of US submarines, and several sources say 40 units were delivered for this purpose. One source says 49 were delivered.
Other sources mention later use on surface craft, though I haven't been able to document specifics.
And some sources mention overseas sales of commercial versions (as opposed to the good stuff for our forces).
It's hard to know how many were actually made, but I doubt there were over 60-100 of either radio, perhaps even less.
It is possible parts of the WLR-6 were adapted for airborne use, but I doubt the whole system was plopped into an airplane.
Its original configuration filled 23 racks and had 5 operator positions spread over several rooms.
Parts of it are likely to have appeared in other settings.
The components in systems like this often had many lives in many forms as firms recycled their in house expertise to garner a bite of the next batch of government largesse.
In the early 60s, ELINT and SIGINT systems were the hot ticket. They evolved rapidly as government accelerated development with generous spending.
Agencies continuously sought to update and modify equipment to gain an edge on their next mission in the Cold War.
As one CEI engineer told me, "Our best radios were never good enough."
